Spring is here

Planning for Spring Planters and Window Boxes

March is the month when we officially cast away the doom and gloom of Winter by celebrating the promise of things to come with the Spring Equinox on the 20th of March. This marks the date when day and night are the same lengths all over the world, with the word equinox literally meaning ‘equal night’ in Latin. In the northern hemisphere, the March equinox is traditionally celebrated as a time of rebirth with many cultures celebrating with holidays, such as the Christian Easter and Passover. But, why wait until then? Now’s the time to prepare your planting refresh and rebirth so that your planters and pots are ready to receive the Spring bulbs and plants.

Planters for evergreen shrubs

The perfect, all year round plants are the every faithful evergreen shrubs such as Box (Buxus Sempervirens), Bay (Laurus Nobilis) or Rosemary. Each of these thrive in planters or pots as long as they’re fed and watered frequently. At this time of year, adding some spring flowering plants such as crocus, primroses, aconites or bulbs such as daffodils and snowdrops help to create some much needed colourful underplanting.

The larger the shrub, the larger the planter or trough should be to ensure that it holds enough soil to support and feed the roots. Our Large Square, Trough and Circular Steel Planters provide ample space for most large specimens or small trees and require so little maintenance.

If you prefer to use our planters to grow twining plants such as Clematis or Honeysuckle, why not choose a Trough with an integral Trellis panel? This will support the plants and help to create a living screen of foliage and colour all summer long.

Seasonal Window Boxes

Window Boxes are the ideal way to display your Spring bulbs or plants, and if positioned on upper floor windows, they provide an instant micro garden for tending through your open window whatever the time of year. Spring provides the first opportunity to fill them with colour, but warmer weather in Summer allows for more nectar rich flowering plants such as Lavender and colourful old favourites such as geraniums and petunias.

We have four standard Window Box designs  –  Wirework, Crescent, Ironwork and Contemporary Window Boxes – and can also make to measure to suit the length of your window. Alternatively, why not fix them directly to your house or garden wall?
